Are you ready for a road trip? Travel Easy!!!

December 16, 2009

Are you ready for a road trip?  Travel Easy!!!

Travelling with your little one can be both fun and challenging at the same time.  Last minute packing can often lead to a stressful time , that little one has so much to pack!

Make a master check list of all your important things and pack a few days ahead so if you need to go shopping  you will have plenty of time.  Use a diaper bag with a waterproof lining and preferably a shoulder strap ( for comfort).

Here are a few things that will help you start your list:

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Change pad
  • Diaper rash crème
  • Disinfecting hand gel
  • Extra pacifiers ( if using)
  • Extra food
  • Snacks
  • Water (for a nursing Mom)
  • Tissues
  • Blankets
  • Toys
  • Updated safety kit (especially if travelling by car)
  • Change of clothes ( at least 2 per day)
  • Safety mirror ( for rear facing infant seat)
  • Sun screen to protect your baby from heat and sun
  • Burp clothes
  • Bibs
  • Bottles
  • Sippy cups
  • Shampoo, soap and body lotion
  • Prevent leaks by packing medicines and toiletries in resealable plastic bags
  • Don’t forget the camera!

Because there is so much to pack, a good idea is to pack travel size products, you can always purchase more when you get to your destination.

Most important of all…..have fun!

Hats for Babies and Toddlers

December 14, 2009

Winter is here….yes, it really is!  Most winter hats for babies and toddlers are made of that fuzzy fleece.  Personally, I really don’t like that fabric and that is why we now have in stock wonderful baby and toddler hats made of 100% cotton!

Hats with ear flaps and hats without, hats with chin bands and hats with squiggly things…take a look…

A New Holiday Tradition

December 10, 2009

As the holiday season approaches I have come to the realization that with the expansion of our family we now celebrate more than just Chanukah.  Our children and our extended families children are marrying into different faiths and celebrating more than just one holiday.

Sunday is our Chanukah party.  I am serving all the traditional foods, all fried ( there goes the diet….again!) But this year I will be adding some non traditional Chanukah favorites.  Tasty treats for Christmas.

Here is my favorite Latke recipe:

Peel potatoes and coarsely grate by hand, transferring to a large bowl of cold water as grated. Soak potatoes 1 to 2 minutes after last batch is added to water, then drain well in a colander.

Spread grated potatoes and onion on a kitchen towel and roll up jelly-roll style. Twist towel tightly to wring out as much liquid as possible. Transfer potato mixture to a bowl and stir in egg and salt.

Heat 1/4 cup oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches of 4 latkes, spoon 2 tablespoons potato mixture per latke into skillet, spreading into 3-inch rounds with a fork. Reduce heat to moderate and cook until undersides are browned, about 5 minutes. Turn latkes over and cook until undersides are browned, about 5 minutes more. Transfer to paper towels to drain and season with salt. Add more oil to skillet as needed. Keep latkes warm on a wire rack set in a shallow baking pan in oven.

And here is my new favorite Christmas recipe:

Gingerbread Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) and place rack in center of oven.  Butter and flour a 9 inch (23 cm) cake pan with 2 inch (5 cm) sides.  Set aside.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, ginger and cloves.  Set aside.

In bowl of your electric mixer (or with a hand mixer), cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).  Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.  Add the lemon zest and molasses and beat to combine.  Add the dry ingredients and milk, alternately, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.  Beat just until incorporated.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with an offset spatula.  Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.  Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before removing cake from pan.  Let cool completely and then frost with the Lemon Icing.  If desired, garnish the top of the frosted cake with toasted walnuts.

For Lemon Icing:  Mix together the sifted confectioners‘ sugar and lemon juice until smooth.  (The icing should be thick but still spreadable.)  Pour the icing onto the center of the cake and spread with an offset spatula.  Some of the icing will drip down the sides of the cake.

This cake will keep for several days at room temperature.   Can serve with softly whipped cream, lemon curd, or saut?d apples.

Makes one – 9 inch (23 cm) cake

Gingerbread Cake:

2 cups (260 grams) all purpose flour

1 teaspoon (5 grams) baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 cup 113 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature

1/2 cup (105 grams) light brown sugar

2 large eggs

Zest of 1 lemon

1/2 cup (120 ml) unsulphured molasses

1 cup (240 ml) milk

Lemon Icing: (Optional)

1 1/2 cups (150 grams) sifted confectioners’ (powdered or icing) sugar

2 – 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Whole toasted walnuts (optional)

Note:  To prevent the molasses from sticking to the measuring cup, first spray the cup with a non stick vegetable spray (like Pam).

Lemon Zest – The yellow outer rind of the lemon that contains the fruit’s flavor and perfume.  The rind being the outer skin of the lemon which consists of both the yellow zest and white membrane (pith).
